• Family in the End Times

Recently, at a leadership “pre-gathering” in Switzerland (for the Global Gathering in Munich, Oct 25-28), we found ourselves in deep travailing intercession for this generation of youth – who despite all the social media and technology, may experience more loneliness and alienation – less “family” – than any other generation in history.

As we prayed, two Scriptures came suddenly to mind, the first being: 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

…in the last days men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, disobedient to parents, unholy…

Whenever I read this, I want to ask Paul: “In your day, were people like little angels, not engaging in all this evil behavior? This is only something for the future ‘Last Days’”?  No, there was plenty of evil in Paul’s day. However, most traditional societies agreed to the existence of absolute standards of morality and taboos. Most people in Paul’s time, be they Jew or Greek, would have agreed (at least in theory) that this list of evils is indeed a list of evils!

So, the prophetic warning is this: a time will come when such behavior will become “normal,” a time when people and their social standards will say: “Self-love? Love of money? Pride? Rebellion? Homosexual marriage? Of course! This is our ‘humanism’; this is how free thinking, “moral” people behave—what’s wrong with it!?!”

We are living in the time that the Apostle prophesied. Self-love and the love of money (the first two on the long list) have become the moral standard for huge chunks of humanity around the globe. The incredible wave of the embrace of same-sex marriage is a similar sign: there is no greater act of self-love and disobedience to family and parents (from whom we received the gift of life) than to affirm same-sex marriage, by which we deny the continuity of life through pro-creation and the raising of children. It is a time when in the name of “alternative families,” we will witness the disintegration of everything that God meant family to be.

The Promise of Restoration

Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. “And he will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers…
– Malachi 4:5-6

This was the 2nd Scripture which the Spirit quickened to me, one which promises something that can only be understood by understanding 2 Timothy first—for if there is no disintegration of the biblical family, then why would Elijah need to come before the Day of the Lord to restore the fathers’ hearts to their children, and children’s hearts to fathers? Isn’t it the most “natural” and “normal” thing for a father’s heart to be towards his children, and vice versa? Well, yes–but not in the End Times! There is nothing more destructive to children than self-loving, self-centered parents; and nothing more offensive to parents than disobedient, rebellious children.

So we are promised that the prophetic, forerunning (Elijah) spirit of the Lord will do a great work in the generation before Yeshua’s return—a work of restoring true family! This is exactly what we were travailing in intercession last month in Switzerland. As we went deeper in prayer, I found myself repeating these words: “we are birthing the last generation…”

In these Last Days, let’s pray together for a restoration of both natural and spiritual family in the church–with the sacrificial love of Messiah at its core.
